January 2026 Round-up

In English, pupils have been reading Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and have begun drafting their own adventure chapters inspired by the text. They have taken part in a range of drama activities, including hot seating, freeze frames and conscious alleys, to explore characters, motives and key moments in the story. The children have also been developing their understanding of archaic vocabulary, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases to improve their writing. Not only this, they made their settings come to life by using their setting descriptions to create an AI generated image!

In Science, the class has started learning about the circulatory system and how the heart works. They discovered a fascinating fact: if all the blood vessels in the human body were laid end to end, they would stretch around 60,000 miles!

In History, pupils are studying Crime and Punishment, comparing Tudor, Victorian and modern-day punishments. They are exploring how laws, consequences and attitudes to crime have changed over time and are developing an understanding of the crime and punishment timeline.

In Art, children are expressing themselves through street art, exploring how this form of art is used to share messages, opinions and identity.

Pupils have made an excellent start to the Mini Police Cadets programme. They have taken part in first aid training, learning basic life-saving skills and how to respond in emergency situations. Fitness training sessions have helped pupils understand the importance of physical health, teamwork and perseverance. The children have also been introduced to police alphabet codes (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.), developing their communication skills and understanding of how clear language is vital in emergency services. Alongside this, pupils have been learning about nutrition and how making healthy choices supports both physical performance and overall wellbeing. The programme is helping pupils build confidence, responsibility and a strong sense of community awareness.

The pupils are also extremely excited and are really looking forward to their upcoming trip to Paris in February, where they will have the opportunity to experience a new culture and make lasting memories together.

December 2025 Round-up

December has been an incredibly busy and memorable month for Year 6, packed full of learning, creativity and special moments as we head towards the end of the term.

In English, the children enjoyed a fantastic trip to Millfield High School, where they walked over to watch a rehearsal of High School Musical. This experience gave them the perfect opportunity to develop their skills as critics and reviewers. The children worked exceptionally hard on writing thoughtful, detailed reviews, carefully considering the acting, singing, staging and overall impact of the performance. We are very proud of the effort they put into their writing and hope that the Millfield students enjoy reading their feedback as much as Year 6 enjoyed watching the rehearsal.

One of the highlights of the month was the Year 6 class assembly, based on World War II. The children were truly outstanding. Through a combination of powerful acting, confident speaking and a moving dance performance, they brought history to life in a way that was both informative and emotional. The assembly was a real credit to the children’s hard work and teamwork, and it certainly left a lasting impression - bringing a tear to many people’s eyes in the audience.

December also marked several important “lasts” for our Year 6 pupils. The children attended their final primary school carol service, which was a very special occasion. Some Year 6 pupils bravely stood up to read passages from the Bible, while others played Silent Night beautifully on the guitar. It was a lovely reminder of how much the children have grown in confidence over the years. Another memorable moment was Year 6’s last primary school Christmas lunch. The children had a wonderful time eating together, celebrating the festive season and enjoying each other’s company. It was a joyful and relaxed way to mark the end of term and create lasting memories. Year 6 also enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Grand Theatre, where they watched the pantomime Beauty and the Beast. The show was full of laughter, music and spectacular performances, and the children had a fantastic time soaking up the festive atmosphere. It was a lovely opportunity for them to experience live theatre and celebrate the run-up to Christmas together.

In Design and Technology, the children showed great creativity and perseverance while designing and making waistcoats for their teddy bears. They carefully planned, measured, cut and assembled their designs, learning valuable sewing and construction skills along the way. The finished waistcoats were fantastic, and the children should be very proud of their hard work.

Overall, December has been a truly special month for Year 6, filled with learning, performances, celebrations and reflection. The children have worked incredibly hard and embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and maturity.

We would like to wish all our Year 6 families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We look forward to an exciting year ahead! 🎄✨

November 2025 Round-up

This month has been an exciting one in our class, packed with hands-on learning and memorable experiences. We launched into British History Day by exploring the inspiring story of the suffragettes. The children learned about their determination, courage and the huge impact they had on securing votes for women. Taking on the role of campaigners themselves, the class wrote persuasive letters to the government, urging them to recognise women’s right to vote. They also created their own suffragette-style badges and took part in a lively roleplay protest, proudly marching and chanting just as campaigners would have done over a century ago. It was a fantastic day for them to connect with history in a meaningful, active way.

We also enjoyed a wonderful author visit from Stephanie Selby. The children were captivated during her assembly, listening with excitement as she spoke about her stories, her writing inspiration and what it’s like to be an author. Her visit sparked lots of curiosity and motivated many of our young writers to think creatively and confidently about their own storytelling.

In English, we have begun our new unit on reviews. To launch the topic, the children took part in a fast-paced ‘speed reviewing’ activity, sharing snap judgments on a range of objects around the classroom. This fun and energetic start really hooked them in, and they quickly became enthusiastic about analysing and expressing their opinions. There will be plenty more to come next month, as December brings an exciting opportunity: we’ll be attending a performance of High School Musical by Millfield students, which the children will review as part of their learning. We can’t wait to see their responses!

October 2025 Round-up

What another amazing month we have had in Year 6!

In Art, the children have been exploring the world through a lens, learning all about macro and realistic photography. They’ve experimented with composition, focus and lighting to capture close-up details that reveal new perspectives on everyday objects. Building on their photography skills, the children then used their images and creativity to design and create their own album covers, combining art, photography and digital design to produce some truly imaginative pieces. They also used photo-realism to draw a self portrait.

Our PE lessons have combined dance and gymnastics this month to create expressive routines inspired by aspects of World War II. The children worked brilliantly in groups to choreograph movements that tell a story and reflect the emotions of the time. This cross-curricular link with History has encouraged teamwork, creativity and empathy.

In English this month, we have been studying biographies. The children explored the key features of this genre, learning how to research and organise information about a person’s life. They then applied these skills to write their own detailed and engaging biographies — showing real progress in both their writing and understanding of structure and purpose.

Our Science lessons have focused on classification — discovering how scientists sort and group living things. The children have enjoyed hands-on activities and discussions about different species, their characteristics and how they fit into the natural world. It’s been fascinating to see their curiosity and scientific thinking grow!

September 2025 Round-up

What an amazing first month we've had in Year 6! The children have settled into new routines and expectations with enthusiasm and resilience and we’re so excited for the year ahead!

This month our class had the fantastic opportunity to visit Hangar 42, to support their learning with their topic of WWII. The children were able to step back in time and experience what life was like during World War II. They explored fascinating exhibits, saw aircraft up close, and even tried out some interactive activities that brought history to life. The staff at Hangar 42 were full of praise for our class. They said the children were not only the most well-behaved group they had welcomed, but also the most knowledgeable, asking thoughtful questions and sharing what they had already learned in school. It was a wonderful day out, and we are so proud of how brilliantly the children represented our school ✈️😀

In PE, the children have been working hard in both gymnastics and dance. They’ve loved showing off their balance, strength, and creativity, and it’s been brilliant to see their confidence and teamwork grow.

In English, we have been exploring our class book Running Wild by Michael Morpurgo. The children have been using roleplay and freeze-frames to bring the chapters to life. This hands-on drama work has really helped them deepen their understanding of the story and has inspired some fantastic creative writing.
