What a great start to Year 5 we have had!
In History, we are learning about how Crime and Punishment has changed over time and we went on a trip to Lancaster Castle for a tour. It was great to see how significant the castle is in crime and punishment.
In Music we have enjoyed learning to play the ukulele which will continue all year. We are so excited to become experts over the year.
In English, we have been reading legends and the story "Outlaw" by Michael Morpurgo. We have then written our own legends based on the ones we have read. We have also enjoyed using our Google Classroom to help us with writing ideas.
In PE, we have become experts at netball, developing and applying the skills of passing and shooting and working on tactics too.
In Art, we have designed portrait poems and created backgrounds. We have loved being about the be creative with what we create.
June has been another busy month in Year 5!
We began the month with a series of workshops "Voices for Equality" where children learnt about prejudice and discrimination in modern society. The workshops opened up lots of interesting discussion and children were very open and respectful in their questions. It has helped us learn how to be positive role models and to ensure fairness, inclusivity and respect for all.
There have been lots of extra curricular opportunities this month, from cricket to ultimate frisbee and Year 5 have represented Team Baines excellently. It is lovely to see the children put themselves forward to try new things. This continued in "Health Week" where we sampled taekwondo, yoga, UV dodgeball and ultimate frisbee.
The highlight of the month has been our PLT campaign. 21 children applied to be on the PLT which is incredible! The standard this year was fantastic, thank you to our families for supporting your children in making their posters and videos. We are proud of each and every one of you and are looking forward to the ideas that PLT and our new prefects will bring in the coming year.
Year 5 have also worked hard with Mrs Mylecraine to continue to develop our Forest School and outdoor areas. We are eagerly awaiting the results from the Wyre In Bloom competition.
Alongside all of this, we have also been learning lots in the classroom. We have read "Skellig" by David Almond, in readiness for a workshop at Millfield next month. In English and Maths, we are focusing on consolidating all of the new skills we have learnt this year in our final push ready for Year 6. Our final Geography topic is learning about the local area and population change and we are working towards a project day with Wain Homes to become architects using our Art and Design Technology skills too.
We have taken lots of pictures of our Forest School this half term to use in a magazine article we are writing in English. They are absolutely gorgeous and some are below for you to see, along with our brass performance!
May has been a busy month for Year 5!
We kicked off with BGT where Year 5 had a huge representation. After close auditions, Daniella and Ellie performed a fantastic gymnastics routine, and Florrie, Amelia, Izzy, Violet, Alice, Amelia, Evelyn, Holly, Primrose and Halle formed "The Merge" and choreographed a group dance. Unfortunately, the final trophies were just out of our reach but we are so proud of our entries.
Our visit to Rossall School for a performing arts workshop was enjoyed by all and many children were inspired by the fantastic facilities on offer at Rossall. We had a fabulous day acting, dancing, singing and playing the trumpet - perhaps we will have some future Rossall scholars...
In English, children have been creating their own adventure stories based around the book "The Girl Who Stole An Elephant" by Nizrana Farook. The story has taken us on an adventure across Sri Lanka and children are still really enjoying sharing the story with their own copy of the text.
We have combined our ICT skills with Science this half term to create videos explaining the life cycles of different animals, some examples are uploaded below for you to enjoy.
In RE, we have been learning about Judaism and hopefully in Summer 2 we will be bringing our learning to life by visiting St Anne's Synagogue...look out for information coming soon!
